More on the Ticket to Ride Board Game
This game has become a classic in the style of Monopoly and Risk. It is not overly complex which is great for
younger children but has an addictive game play that intrigues one and all.
The basic premise behind the game is to travel all over the North American continent via train. It is set in the
time when train travel was the best way to travel long distances – around the beginning of the 20th century. No
doubt the setting and theme are inspired by the Jules Verne book around the world in 80 days.
The idea is to travel to the most destinations or build train routes to each destination. The person at the the
end of the game that has visited the most destinations or has the most train routes (or a combination of both) is
the winner.
The board is a map representation of the North American continent with various cities as destinations. Linking
the cities are train routes that vary in length. Each route will have one or many links. Longer routes have more
links and are worth more points when you own them.
Players are given around 45 train car blocks that they place on links along the routes. You are said to own a
route when all the links are filled by your train car blocks. And this is also a way to get to your destination
cities.

The game play strategy comes in when you block your opponents from getting to their destination or owning a
route. But of course you have to reach your own destinations too and even build your routes. So it is a trade off
which makes the game play highly addictive and fun.
What's more, the game play is easy to pick up and even young kids will understand how to play
quickly and soon be developing the nuanced strategies needed to be successful.
The game is well produced and quick to set up. It is made for 2 to 5 players to play at any one time and
could take around 30 to 60 minutes to play based on how quickly the game play goes.
The game play is determined by picking up cards, either destination cards of train route cards. When all the
cards are used up, the game has come to an end and the person with the most point is the winner.
There is a Europe version of the game which uses the map of Europe as the setting. And you can get an expansion
pack for the original game that adds more destinations to the original map and makes the game play more complex.
The expansion pack is great for people that already have the game and in fact you need the original Ticket to
Ride game to use the expansion pack.
