Although this is a toy railway set of an imaginary train that has human characteristics, the way that the railway set works and the buildings that make up the set are quite accurate to building that really existed in the early to middle 20th century Britain (where Thomas and Friends author Rev. W. (Wilbert) Awdry came from and was no doubt inspired by). A point in case is the key feature or building of the railway set – the Roundhouse.

The roundhouse was a round shaped building where locomotives where repaired. In the Thomas books and TV series, it's sometimes used as a place where the trains go to sleep or be repaired also. Inside the roundhouse would be a turntable of rail tracks. This allowed trains to be rolled into and out of the various doors simply by rotating the turntable.

Given that locomotives were very heavy and rather hard to maneuver, a roundhouse with turntable made it easier to get trains in and out for vital repairs. Trains became more maneuverable with modern advances but many of the old roundhouse continued to stand and be used. Today, many that are still standing are considered to be trust or heritage buildings that are restored and turned into museums.

This Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway Roundhouse Set includes the accurate looking Roundhouse. The roof lifts off so that you can get into the middle and play around with the engines. The roundhouse is central to rest of the set. A rail track runs through the roundhouse and the turntable can be moved to get each engine out on the track.

After the round house there are is two open bridges, one covered bridge, and operable track signals. You also get a water tower and a stop & go Station. The track is easy to put together and the completely constructed set measures around 47" x 31". That's pretty big and will fascinate young children and old adults alike with it's attention to detail.

In terms of the characters from the Thomas& Friends series, you get 10 train cars. These include Thomas, Henry and tender, Bertie, Rusty with dumper and mixer, Duke with coal car, Skarloey, Sodor Line Caboose and Sir Topham Hatt. They are also constructed of wood, as are the tracks and other accessories.

Once the railway set is put together, children can make up their own Thomas & Friends stories and let their imagination run like a steam train with all the stops pulled out. All the pieces can be stored away in a large circular box that looks like Thomas and has a padded top surface so that you can sit on it if you so choose.
